Companies are now trying to entice workers beyond a bump in wages.

Last month, Target announced that it was joining a growing list of retailers and restaurant chains offering educational assistance at select online institutions for its front-line employees in a fiercely competitive job market.
The Minneapolis-based discounter said Wednesday that it plans to spend $200 million over the next four years to offer its workers free undergraduate and associate degree programs as well as certificates in business-oriented majors at select institutions such as University of Arizona and University of Denver.
Textbooks will also be free.
Target’s move follows an announcement in July by Walmart that it will cover the full cost of tuition and books for its 1.5 million part-time and full-time Walmart and Sam’s Club workers in the US through its Live Better U program.
The nation’s largest retailer and private employer previously charged employees $1 a day to participate.
It said it will invest nearly $1billion over the next five years in career-driven training and development.
Walmart told reporters last month that those who participate in the education program, which began in 2018, are twice as likely to get promoted and are retained at a significant higher rate than other workers.

Home Depot, UPS, FedEx, Chipotle, and Starbucks are other big brand names that have put in place programs to help pay for employees’ college.
Waste Management has offered to pay the costs of college degrees and professional certificates not just for employees but also for their spouses and children.
The move by Amazon would help it attract talent and beef up its delivery network and fulfillment center staff, at a time when labor shortages have left companies scrambling to fill vacancies and balance remote and in-office work in a reopening economy.
Amazon said it had seen a surge in applications to participate in education programs since the start of the pandemic, as employees looked to upskill.
It offers various upskilling programs including in Amazon Web Services, its cloud computing unit that saw demand shoot up thanks to remote work.
‘Amazon is now the largest job creator in the US, and we know that investing in free skills training for our teams can have a huge impact for hundreds of thousands of families across the country,’ said Dave Clark, CEO of Worldwide Consumer at Amazon.
‘We launched Career Choice almost 10 years ago to help remove the biggest barriers to continuing education – time and money – and we are now expanding it even further to pay full tuition and add several new fields of study.’
Studies show that employees who have college degrees earn more money over the course of their years spent in the workforce.
Men who complete a bachelor’s degree earn some $900,000 more over the course of their career than men who completed high school, according to the Social Security Administration.
Women with a bachelor’s degree earn $630,000 more than women who completed high school, the SSA said.
On Wednesday, the Labor Department reported that employers posted 10.9 million job openings in July – the most on records dating to 2000.
For job-seekers, the abundance of vacancies is a welcome occurrence. Yet the magnitude of unfilled job openings poses a potential problem for the economy, especially if it persists over the long run: Companies that are short of employees can’t capitalize on a surge in consumer demand, thereby hampering economic growth.

‘Employers really want to staff up right now, especially those sectors that were hit hard by the pandemic,’ said Nick Bunker, research chief at the Indeed Hiring Lab.
‘But a fair number of unemployed or job seekers don’t feel that same sense of urgency.’
The economy generated just 235,000 jobs last month – about a third what economists had expected and down sharply from 962,000 in June and 1.1 million in July.
Restaurants and bars cut 42,000 jobs in August, after the accommodation and food services industry as a whole added 115,000 jobs in July, according to the JOLTS report.
Hotels added just 7,000, the fewest since February.
President Joe Biden shared an optimistic view of the dismal numbers on Friday.
‘What we’re seeing is an economic recovery that is durable and strong. The Biden plan is working, we’re getting results,’ he said at the White House Friday morning.
But he admitted the Delta variant was why the Friday report ‘wasn’t stronger.’
Biden also pointed out the stock market’s progress and even threw in a jab at former President Trump.
‘There have been so many records the stock market has hit under my presidency. Imagine if the other guy was here? “We’re doing great, it’s wonderful, the stock market is surging, it’s gone up higher under me than anybody.” But that doesn’t mean that it’s the best for the economy,’ he said.
He added that the ‘stock market has hit 40 record highs just this year.’
In the meantime, workers are leaving their employers in historic numbers, apparently confident enough in their job prospects to try something new.

In its report Wednesday, the Labor Department said that 3.98 million people quit their jobs in July, just shy of the record 3.99 million who did so in April.
Many businesses have blamed generous federal unemployment benefits – including a $300-a-week supplement to state aid – for allowing the jobless to take their time returning to work.
In response, about half the states withdrew from the federal program.
But in a report last month, economists Peter McCrory and Daniel Silver of J.P. Morgan found ‘zero correlation,’ at least so far, between job growth and state decisions to drop the federal unemployment aid.
In any case, the federal benefits ended nationwide on Monday, just as more and more schools are reopening.
Bunker said he is hopeful that the job market will return to its pre-pandemic state sometime next year.
